The population of the species has been significantly overestimated for decades, and only recently has it been estimated at a much lower number: 14,000-28,000 pairs. Threats to the species include a wide variety of human-related factors; let them serve as examples collisions with airplanes (airports are an attractive habitat for snowy owls) and cars.
