The only endemic mammal in Azores islands.The only species of bat in the world that hunts insects principally by day (a single Italian population of another bat species does so), probably due to the absence of avian predators.

IUCN Red List: Vulnerable (VU).

Populations of this species on individual islands of the archipelago are vulnerable to fragmentation as a result of human activity.
